Medalist, the cycling race's organizer, has to approve the stage - an uphill time trial scheduled for May 9.
Sources said the proposed route starts at the Salem Civic Center and runs past Hidden Valley Country Club and Sugar Loaf Mountain before moving over to U.S. 221 near Cave Spring Junior High School. The route cuts over to the Blue Ridge Parkway, passing Roanoke and Mill mountains before finishing at the city market in downtown Roanoke.
City Councilman Delvis "Mac" McCadden, president of the local organizing committee, would say only that the proposed route starts in Salem and finishes in downtown Roanoke.
"It's exactly 25 miles, with four miles of mountain terrain," McCadden said. "It involves all the jurisdictions [Salem, the city of Roanoke and Roanoke County]."
McCadden said the organizing committee was looking at Nov. 15 as the date for finalizing the route.
The committee also has received commitments from sponsors for the stage, but more are needed. Interested businesses should call Donovan Young at 985-4254.
