PRISONER GRABS GUN, WOUNDS 2 OFFICERS

A man arrested after a car chase with police wriggled out of handcuffs, grabbed an officer's gun and shot and wounded two officers, police said Thursday.

Alvernon Coppedge Jr., 28, was handcuffed and being questioned by Officers Lester Bollinger and Nathan Windley, when he said his handcuffs were too tight.

"An officer was attempting to loosen the handcuffs, when the suspect was able to free himself and struggle with officers," Sgt. Donnie Moore said.

Coppedge grabbed one officer's gun and fired. The 10mm bullet pierced Bollinger's forearm and lodged in Windley's foot.
