REGIONAL SERVICES EXPANSION OK'D

Officials from five Roanoke Valley governments agreed Thursday to expand the list of services that could be combined into regional authorities.

The officials added public housing, tourism, public transportation and community services to their original list, which included utilities and economic development.

The group agreed to meet weekly to discuss ways to turn the concept of regional cooperation into workable policy.

Roanoke County Del. Richard Cranwell, who will be chairman of the meetings, said he was confident the group could reach an agreement before the General Assembly convenes in January.

Cranwell said he would try to get the legislature to give more revenue to the area if the local governments could take a regional approach to some services.

The group has representatives from Roanoke, Vinton, Salem, Botetourt County and Roanoke County.
