TEACHERS' UNION BEGINS BREAST CANCER PROGRAM

The American Federation of Teachers has a "lifesaving message" for its members: Teachers face a greater risk of dying of breast cancer than women in most other jobs, so early detection and treatment are essential.

Armed with statistics from a national research study, the union launched a breast cancer awareness program Thursday designed to educate teachers about the importance of regular breast exams and mammograms.

"We need to determine whether female teachers are availing themselves of these early detection procedures, and if not, how we can help them follow breast cancer screening guidelines," said Helen Ramirez, a school nurse in Chicago and a breast cancer survivor.
