SHAWSVILLE SPURT NUDGES NARROWS

Shawsville used a 28-point fourth quarter to make a big comeback in a 57-50 victory over Narrows on Thursday night in Mountain Empire District girls' basketball.

Amy Roberts hit a basket with 1 minute, 30 seconds remaining in the game to give Shawsville (8-5 overall, 8-4 in the district) the lead after the Shawnees trailed 39-29 at the end of three quarters. Roberts finished with 12 points.

The Shawnees also were helped by Narrows' turnovers. The Green Wave (5-8, 4-8) turned over the ball 34 times in the game, 22 times in the second half. \ Radford 42\ Carroll County 28

HILLSVILLE - Charlee Taylor led the Bobcats with 13 points and the Cavaliers shot a woeful 11-of-51 from the floor in a New River District game.

Radford (5-11, 1-1) stormed to a 24-10 halftime lead and held off Carroll County (7-6, 0-2).

\ Auburn 54\ Fort Chiswell 46

RINER - Sherry Smith scored 16 points, and Renay Gardner scored all five of her points in the fourth quarter as the Eagles soared past the Pioneers in the Mountain Empire District.

Auburn (10-3, 9-3) trailed 36-35 after three quarters, but used a 19-point final period to seal the victory.

\ Giles 47\ Bland 41

BLAND - The Spartans rallied from a 10-point deficit behind Heather Matlock and Tamika Saunders as they defeated the Rockets in the Mountain Empire District.

Matlock scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half and Saunders scored 10 of her 14 for Giles.

Rachel French scored a game-high 24 points for Bland and Pachess Umbarger added 11.i

\ Staunton River 61\ Rustburg 30

MONETA - Tanya Nelms scored 12 of her game-high 19 points in the first quarter as the Golden Eagles swamped the Red Devils in a Seminole District game.

Deena Mitchell added 14 points for Staunton River (10-2), which led 34-14 at halftime and never looked back.

Rustburg's record fell to 1-10.

\ Floyd County 74\ Galax 33

GALAX

Lynette Nolley scored 23 points as the fourth-ranked Buffaloes overwhelmed the Maroon Tide in the Mountain Empire District.

Lee-Ann Pursifull added 11 points for Floyd County (14-1, 12-0), which got points from 13 players.

Jaclyn Dickens led Galax (9-4, 9-3) with 15 points.

\ Liberty 50\ William Campbell 47

BEDFORD - The Minettes raced to a 17-point halftime lead, then held on for a narrow victory over the Generals in the Seminole District.

Felicia Miller led Liberty (11-3, 11-3) with 15 points. William Campbell is 8-6 and 8-6.
