TODAY'S TOPIC: TALKING TO VOTERS

Would you be willing to have an open question session for the voters in Southwest Virginia?

- Herb Crez, Roanoke.

Mary Sue Terry:

"I've taken the opportunity, as much as I've been able to, to participate in call-in shows on radio stations around the state. And I've done that from time to time in Roanoke. But we'd certainly welcome the opportunity to visit with our friends at WFIR in [Roanoke] at some time between now and the election.

"We anticipate doing that, to have the opportunity to listen to citizens from my home area, respond to questions, and get any ideas or suggestions people might have."

George Allen:

"I spent this summer traveling around the state in a motor home, listening to the concerns of Virginia voters. I did this while my opponent was sipping wine and nibbling cheese with Hillary Clinton and others, raising money for her media-based campaign.

"I have often said that the granite walls in Richmond are hard to hear through. That is why I believe that it is essential for leaders to listen to the people, and to take their message directly to them.

"Once elected, I will not take for granted those who elected me. Unfortunately, it often happens in politics that once elected, politicians forget that they are serving the people who put them there. I want to change that in Virginia.

"This campaign represents a turning point from 12 years of the Wilder/Robb/Terry Democrats who have lost touch with the people of Virginia. That is why our campaign has the momentum.

"But I cannot do it alone. I need support and advice from folks across our great Commonwealth. That is why I have said that while I am a governor I will repeat my `listening tour' around the state, bringing the issues facing the Commonwealth to you for input. As the place where I started my campaign "listening tour" in Southwest, I am certain to return to Southwest often over the course of the next four years."
