BEYER SET TO OUTSPEND FARRIS CAMP

Beginning the final month of the campaign for lieutenant governor, Republican challenger Mike Farris had spent almost twice as much as incumbent Democrat Don Beyer.

But Beyer had almost four times as much cash on hand for the final crucial weeks, according to financial reports released Friday by the candidates.

The figures, covering money collected and spent through Sept. 30, don't reflect the statewide television commercial blitz begun by Beyer earlier this month.

Farris, who has advertised on radio, is expected to hit television in a few days.

In the contest for attorney general, Democrat Bill Dolan had raised more money than Republican Jim Gilmore, but Gilmore had more cash on hand.

All candidates for statewide office had until midnight Friday to mail reports to the state Board of Elections detailing their campaigns' contributions and expenditures.

Those figures show that Beyer has raised $1.2 million, with $760,482 on hand as the campaign began its final month.

Farris has raised $789,431, with $195,051 for the final four weeks of the campaign.

Neither reported any debts or loans.

In the attorney general's race, Dolan had raised $1.1 million, with $172,753 on hand. His contributors' list included Roanoke lawyer Carole Agee, the sister of Del. Steven Agee, R-Salem, whom Gilmore defeated in June for the GOP nomination.

Gilmore reported raising $662,518, with $213,660 on hand.
