GOLFERS TAKE AIM AT STATE TITLES

William Byrd will be seeking its second straight Group AA title and Glenvar will be shooting for its second Group A title in three years when the state high school golf championships start today.

The Group AA tournament will be held at Bowling Green Country Club in Front Royal.

Byrd, which rallied in the final round last year to win the state on its home Blue Hills course, is led by senior Ryan Ketron, defending Group AA individual state champion.

Byrd won the Blue Ridge District's regular-season title before finishing second to Brookville in last week's Region III tournament at Countryside.

Timesland individuals who qualified for the 36-hole state include Region III runner-up Brian Hill of Northside, Mark Sweeney of Lord Botetourt, Eric Pitches of Bassett and Dwayne Dodson of Magna Vista.

Glenvar, which captured the state crown in 1991 and finished third in 1992, advanced to the Group A tournament at Lonesome Pine Country Club in Big Stone Gap by winning its third straight Region C title last week at Countryside. Giles was the other regional qualifier.

Glenvar's Nick Varney and Giles' Andrew Wagner are among the favorites for the Group A individual title.

Other Timesland individual entries include Jon Ervin, Brian Love and Jeff Troy of George Wythe.

Cave Spring's Doug Kenney will be Timeland's only representative at the Group AAA tournament at Greens Folly Golf Club in South Boston. Kenney, a sophomore, qualified by finishing third in the Northwestern Region tourney last week.
