SCHOOLS PLAN PARENT-TEACHER GET-TOGETHERS

It's a busy week for area high schools as Parent-Teacher Associations and parent-teacher conferences are in the works. It's a good time to see what your children are up to in school and get to know their teachers.

Most conferences have been set up in conjunction with the ending of the first six-weeks grading period, so parents also can check their children's progress so far this year.

"Usually the turnout is really good," said Christiansburg High School principal George Porterfield about the parent-teacher conferences.

"We have conferences all the time, but this is the first scheduled one of the year."

Porterfield said there is a direct relationship between parents who attend school conferences and their children's performance in school.

"No question," he said.

"So often the [parents] that come are the ones we don't need to see anyway. . . . When they stay in touch with us there is no doubt students will do better."

Porterfield encourages all parents to come to conferences:

"It's an opportunity for parents to meet with teachers one-on-one, and really find out what their kids are doing," he said.

For those schools holding conferences, be sure to call ahead of time to make an appointment.

Meetings are set up at 15-minute intervals most of the time, and tours of classrooms are available.
