High school altercation ends in student's death

HAMPTON - A 16-year-old student was fatally stabbed Monday at Kecoughtan High School, and police arrested another student in the attack, authorities said.

The stabbing resulted from an altercation that began shortly after 11 a.m. between the victim, Javal Allen, and the other student. The fight started in the school and then was carried outside to a parking lot, where Allen was stabbed in the neck, said police Sgt. Donnie Moore.

Allen, an 11th-grader, was taken to Sentara Hampton General Hospital, where he died shortly after noon, Moore said. Allen's attacker fled but was captured within a few minutes. Charges were pending against the attacker, who was not identified.

Moore said school officials dismissed classes for the day at 12:20 p.m. because of the incident. - Associated Press

Volunteer firefighter charged with arson

STUART - A volunteer firefighter in Patrick County has been charged with arson in seven fires set recently in the Patrick Springs-Critz area.

Lester J. Moore, 18, of Bassett, a volunteer with the Patrick-Henry Volunteer Fire Department, was arrested Sunday and charged with seven counts of setting fires that occurred between Aug. 4 and Oct. 10, Sheriff Jay Gregory said. A 16-year-old Patrick County youth also was charged with seven counts of arson.

Moore is accused of setting fires that destroyed property with a total value of between $70,000 and $80,000, the sheriff said.

One blaze destroyed a home worth about $50,000. "Ironically, we believe that these two suspects responded to the emergency pager calls in helping to put the fire out," Gregory said. - Associated Press
