GLENVAR LEADS STATE GOLF TOURNEY

Nick Varney shot a 4-over-par 75 Monday as Glenvar captured the lead at the first day of the Group A State high school golf tournament at Lonesome Pine Country Club in Big Stone Gap.

Glenvar, which won the state crown in 1991 and finished third last year, totaled 312. William Monroe is six shots back at 318, followed by West Point (339), Powell Valley (341) and Central Lunenburg (342).

Varney is three strokes behind individual leaders Paul Necessary of Powell Valley and Troy Thorne of Rapphanock.

The 36-hole tournament concludes today.

In other high school sports:

William Byrd, led by Ryan Ketron's 79, was in fourth place after one round at the Group AA state golf tournament at Bowling Green Country Club in Front Royal. The Terriers are seeking their second straight state title.

Brookville, the Region III tournament winner, is leading the 36-hole tournament at 311. Warren County is second at 315, followed by York (320) and William Byrd (321).

Ketron, the defending Group AA individual state champion, is six strokes behind individual leaders Chip Glover of Fort Defiance and Faber Jamerson of Appomattox.

Also for William Byrd, Chris Turner and Chris McVie shot 80s and Kevin Divers had an 82.

Great Bridge shot a combined 309 for a 13-shot lead in the opening round of the Group AAA state golf championship in South Boston. Conlin Giles from Maury shot a par-71 for the top round of the day. Doug Kenney of Cave Spring is four shots back at 75. The tournament concludes today.

At New Castle, Rebecca McNeil dominated inside for Christiansburg which beat Craig County 62-38 in a non-district girls' basketball game. McNeil scored 30 points for the Demons.

Chrissy Robertson had 31 and Rebecca Peters 7 to account for all of the points for the Rockets (4-8). \

Juniors Toree Morris and Marilea Hale combined for 47 points as host Glenvar defeated Shawsville 57-33 in a non-district girls' basketball game.

Morris scored 23 points while Hale had 24 points and 14 rebounds. Kristi Robinson added five assists for the Highlanders (12-3).

Kelly Ryan led the Shawnees with 12 points. \

At Buchanan, Kara Mundy and Teresa Hickman scored 20 points each as James River routed Auburn 62-31 in a non-district girls' basketball game.

Hickman grabbed 10 rebounds and Mundy had six assists for the Knights (7-7). Angie Johnson chipped in 10 points.

No players scored in double digits for Auburn (10-4). \
