NIXON TO BACK ALLEN AT N.Y. FUND-RAISER

George Allen, the coach, was a favorite of Richard Nixon, the president, who once drafted a play for his beloved Washington Redskins. Twenty years later, Nixon again is offering his help, this time to the coach's son - George Allen, the politician.

Nixon will appear with the Republican candidate for Virginia governor Thursday night at a fund-raiser in New York. Although Nixon, 80, rarely attends such events these days, he was delighted to make an exception in Allen's case, the ex-president's chief of staff, Kathy O'Connor, said Tuesday.

During a debate in Richmond on Monday, Allen boasted that he had supported Presidents Reagan and Bush but never mentioned Nixon. "You would think that he would be trumpeting the fact that the former president who resigned in disgrace is throwing him a fund-raiser," said Tom King, consultant to Democratic candidate Mary Sue Terry.
