UNDEFEATED INDIANS CLINCH DISTRICT TITLE

The Rural Retreat girls' basketball team had two reasons to celebrate Tuesday night.

First, the Indians rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to edge Northwood 49-45, clinching the Hogoheegee District regular-season title.

And in the process, junior Beth Ketner set a school record for steals in a career.

Ketner had six steals against the Panthers, giving her 95. The former record was 92 by Deedra Williams, who completed her career in 1978.

Ketner also scored a game-high 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds and passed for seven assists.

Tanya Tarter added 13 points for Rural Retreat (16-0 overall, 12-0 in the district).

Heather Gillespie scored 12 points and Rebecca DeBoard added 10 for Northwood.

Magna Vista 48

RIDGEWAY - The Bulldogs used balanced scoring and a big second half to overwhelm the Warriors in a Piedmont District game.

Tresita Holland scored 21 points to lead the Bulldogs, who outscored the hosts 41-23 after halftime. Samantha Ferguson and Erica Brandon had 12 points each and Keenya Hairston added 11.

Tanesia Kellam scored 14 points to lead Magna Vista (12-4, 9-4).

INDEPENDENCE - Micki Young sank a foul shot at the end of regulation to give the Blue Devils the Mountain Empire District win.

Young had been fouled on a three-point attempt at the buzzer and had been eligible for three foul shots.

Grayson County (2-13, 2-11) held a 21-9 lead going at the end of the third quarter but Bland (0-15, 0-13) outscored the Blue Demons 15-4 in the final period to pull close. \

BASSETT - The Bengals bolted to a 45-14 lead at halftime and cruised to a Piedmont District victory. Tasha Hairston led four Bassett (15-0, 13-0) players in double figures with 16 points. Lori Wimbush added 13 points, and Kim Hairston and Aimee Barker added 12 each. \

Bath County 29 Relentless pressure by the Cougars (5-9, 5-3) aid off

in the fourth quarter as they pulled away for a Pioneer District victory over the Chargers (3-12, 0-6). \

COVINGTON - Teamwork paid off for the Mountaineers in a Blue Ridge District victory over the Wildcats.

Nicole Curtis, Tricia Rice and Andrea Moore all scored 17 points for Alleghany (10-5, 2-3). Rockbridge County (4-11, 0-5) was led by Jessica Austin with 10 points. \

BUCHANAN - Stephanie Rhodes scored 24 points, including three 3-pointers, as the Fighting Blues (8-6, 5-3) defeated the Knights in a Pioneer District game. The Knights (7-8, 5-2) were paced by Angie Johnson's 11 points. \

MARTINSVILLE - Tanesha Hairston scored 25 points as the Lancers pounded the Wildcats in a Piedmont District contest. Toy Perkins scored 14 points for the Lancers (10-5, 9-4), teammate Torsheda Dillard had 12 and Tonya Martin chipped in 10. \
