LURAY - Shenandoah National Park, which threatened last year to close sections of the Skyline Drive during the winter to save money, will keep the entire drive open this winter.
Tourism businesses surrounding the park met last November's proposal by Park Superintendent J.W. Wade with vociferous opposition, and lined up politicians to pressure the park to keep the scenic 105-mile drive open.
A news release Wednesday said the drive also would stay open this winter, although some visitor centers will have shorter hours, and campgrounds will close Oct. 31 because of budget constraints.

\ 3 guns found at school; 16-year-old charged
VIRGINIA BEACH - For the second straight day, authorities have found a sawed-off shotgun at a city high school. This time, the weapon was loaded, police said Thursday.
Green Run High School authorities, acting on information that police declined to describe, found a 9mm handgun with 12 rounds on a 16-year-old student shortly after noon, police spokesman Mike Carey said.
After talking to the ninth-grader, authorities found the loaded shotgun and another 9mm handgun wrapped together in a shirt under a portable classroom near the school gymnasium, Carey said.
The student, who was not identified because of his age, was charged with possession of a sawed-off shotgun and two counts of possession of a firearm on school property, both felonies.
On Wednesday, authorities at Bayside High School found an unloaded sawed-off shotgun in a school locker. A 16-year-old ninth-grader was charged in that case. - Associated Press
