OBIT STAFFORD, JAMES WILLIAM SR.
STAFFORD, James William Sr., 82, of Radford, passed away Saturday, October
23, 1993, at his home. He was born February 1, 1911 in Radford, the son of the
late James and Sallie Stafford. He was preceded in death by a brother and two
sisters. He was a life long member of the First Baptist Church, serving
faithfully in many positions in both the Church and Sunday School. He was a
member of the choir for over 52 years. He was a Deacon Emeritus and on the
Board of Trustees. He began employment as a clerk in the Radford Post Office
in 1939, and retired after 33 years of service, the last ten years being in
the position of Postmaster. He served on the Radford School Board with
outstanding service from 1948 to 1960. During his time on the Board, he was
Chairman, during which time two new schools were built, Belle Heth and McHarg.
He was a member of the Virginia May Masonic Lodge #38 AF & AM for 54 years,
receiving his 50 year pin in 1989. He was Master of the Lodge in 1945. He was
a member of the Radford Fire Department and served as treasurer for many
years. He was treasurer of the Radford Health Council and was an active member
of the Radford Rotary Club, receiving the Paul Harris Fellow. He was active in
the Democratic Party and was treasurer. Survivors include his devoted wife of
53 years, Louise W. Stafford of Radford; one son and daughter-in-law, James
William and Mildred Stafford Jr. of Radford; one daughter, Ann S. Sutton of
Radford; one sister, Mrs. Gladys Rock of Portsmouth, Ohio; a special grandson,
John Kirkwood Sutton Jr.; stepgrandson, Greg Kalka; several nephews, including
James W. Allen of Radford. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 26,
1993, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Radford with the Rev. Joe
Burton, the Rev. Will Robbins and Dr. Charles Taylor officiating. Interment
will follow in Sunrise Burial Park in Radford where members of the Virginia
May Masonic Lodge will conduct graveside rites. Honorary pallbearers are the
Deacons, both active and past, of the First Baptist Church, Postal workers,
both active and retired, and members of the Rotary Club. In lieu of flowers,
the family requests that contributions be made to the First Baptist Church
Music Ministry. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Monday at
the Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home in Radford.
