OBIT SHAW, WALTER AUBREY JR.

SHAW, Walter Aubrey Jr., 75, of Newport, died Sunday, October 24, 1993 in the Roanoke Memorial Rehabilitation Center, Roanoke. He was the son of Walter Aubrey and Lola LaFern Woodcock Shaw of Lynchburg, and was born June 25, 1918. He was preceded in death by his father, his mother and his brother, Leonard Booker Shaw. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Jarrett Shaw, of the home; his son, Dean Jarrett Shaw, Atlanta, Ga.; his brother, Edwin Freeman Shaw, Lynchburg; a niece, Roberta LaFern Davis, Granville, Ohio and numerous cousins. Mr. Shaw graduated from E. C. Glass High School in Lynchburg, attended the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, graduated from Lynchburg College, Lynchburg and lacked six hours of completing a Master's degree at Radford University, Radford. He served in World War II at Fort Monroe, in the Army of the U.S., Battery F, 246th Coast Guard Artillery, and received an honorable discharge on November 1, 1941. Mr. Shaw served as Field Executive for the Boy Scouts of America in the Danville, South Boston and Newport News, Hampton areas. He retired from Hercules Co., R.A.A.P after serving for 32 years. He was a Personnel Specialist and had responsibilities as the plant photographer and editor of the plant newspaper, The Powder Press. In 1955, he started the Shaw Postcard Company and serviced this area with postcards, maps and books. He was one of the organizers of the Association of Retarded Citizens, the New River Valley Workshop, and homes for retarded citizens. He was involved with the Long Way Home Outdoor Drama for many years and served as the Public Relations Director. He was a member of the Blacksburg United Methodist Church, where the funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 27, 1993, with the Rev. Herbert Hobbs and the Rev. Walter B. Barger officiating. Graveside services will follow at 3 p.m. at Fort Hill Memorial Park, Lynchburg. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Long Way Home, P. O. Box 711, Radford, Va., 24141. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.
