WINN-DIXIE SETTLES CHILD-LABOR VIOLATIONS

Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. has agreed to pay $175,000 for child-labor violations in five Southeastern states.

Under the agreement announced Tuesday, Winn-Dixie admitted to violations at stores in Montgomery, Ala.; Middleburg and Tallahassee, Fla.; Brunswick, Ga.; Henderson, Lexington, North Wilkesboro, Dallas, Mebane, Reidsville, and Eden, N.C.; and Marion and Chapin, S.C.

Winn-Dixie was accused of allowing minors to operate, load or clean hazardous equipment such as paper bailing machines. But the chain said many of the violations consisted of tossing a piece of paper into a non-operating bailer. - Associated Press
