THE PEOPLE COLUMN

Famed photographer Richard Avedon, 70, has been slapped with a $5 million lawsuit by his former daughter-in-law, who says he shot nude pictures of his grandsons and behaved inappropriately with the boys, now 10 and 13. Elizabeth Paul Avedon, who divorced the lensman's son John in 1987, is seeking an injunction against the sale or display of the photos of her sons.

The photographer, who just published "An Autobiography," a $100 collection of his fashion and portrait work, denied the allegations Monday: "The statements made about me are totally false and slanderous. It is a tragedy . . . that Elizabeth would try to gain a financial advantage by launching this type of attack."

\ Vanna White is P-R-E-G-N-A-N-T.

The "Wheel of Fortune" hostess is expecting a baby in June, the show's producers announced Tuesday.

White, 36, is married to restaurateur George Santo Pietro. During a taping of the popular television game show last year, White announced that she was pregnant. She later suffered a miscarriage.

\ Shannen Doherty didn't end up marrying Judd Nelson, but he has at least one lasting reminder of their time together. The thirtysomething actor, who was accused of kicking a woman in the head after Nelson and Doherty were heckled outside a Dallas restaurant, got two years' probation Monday after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor assault charge. Some witnesses said the kick was accidental, but a security guard said Nelson intentionally kicked Kim Evans in the back of the head, karate-style. Evans, who was at a table with the hecklers, says she has suffered headaches and dizzy spells since her May encounter with the former Brat Packer.

\ Former "Diff'rent Strokes" star Gary Coleman, who had accused his parents and ex-manager of skimming his earnings from the sitcom, has finally ended his nasty, four-year court battle. Terms of the settlement weren't disclosed.

Coleman, 26, said he was "extremely pleased with the judge's findings and very happy with the settlement." A judge awarded Coleman nearly $1.3 million earlier this year, but Monday's settlement ends suits over his parents' attempt to appoint a guardian for him.
