HALLOWEEN TALES AT THE PEAKS

If you stand on the top of Sharp Top Mountain in Bedford and listen carefully to the wind this Halloween, you might just hear a ghost. Under a full moon, at the most rugged summit in the Peaks of Otter, ghosts will come alive as National Park Service Ranger Neal Andreae offers "Halloween Tales" for anyone brave enough to come and listen.

Andreae will lead a hike up the strenuous 1.6 mile trail to the summit beginning at 6 p.m. on Saturday Oct. 30 from Peaks Campstore. Bring good shoes and a flashlight. Less adventurous visitors can catch the concession tour bus to the top at 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Participants are encouraged to arrive early because bus seating is limited.

The hour-long program begins just after 7 p.m. in the rocks on the mountaintop. Its theme is ghost stories and history of the Appalachians.

A second program starts at 9:30 p.m. at Polly Wood's Ordinary, located between Peaks of Otter Lodge and the picnic area. It is handicap accessible and will serve as the alternate site in the event of rain.

For more information call the Peaks of Otter Visitor Center at (703) 586-4357.
