CAVALIERS SINK ALLEGHANY

Lord Botetourt sank 15 of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter Thursday night to defeat Alleghany 70-55 and clinch at least a tie for the Blue Ridge District regular-season girls' basketball title.

Jenny Gates had 23 points, Ashley Moore 13 and Marsa Michalski 12 for Lord Botetourt (18-1 overall, 8-0 in the district).

Alleghany (10-7) made only 12 of 26 free throws in the game, well below its season average. \

Glenvar 53

Covington 34

The host Highlanders took an early lead and went on to clinch at least a tie for the Pioneer regular-season district title.

Glenvar (15-3, 10-0) bolted to a 27-13 halftime lead.

Glenvar's Marilea Hale led all scorers with 20 points. \

Northside 47

William Byrd 45

Sarah Hicks hit a three-point goal with five seconds remaining in regulation and the host Vikings (8-10, 4-4) went on to defeat the Terriers (13-5, 6-2) in overtime in a Blue Ridge District game.

The Vikings trailed 28-11 early in the third quarter, then they switched from man-to-man to zone defense to keep the Terriers confused. Northside outscored Byrd 15-2 in the fourth quarter. The Vikings hit 10 of 13 free throws in that period, while Byrd went 0-for-5 from the line.

Byrd's Jackie Banks led all scorers with 19 points.

Rockbridge County 21

LEXINGTON - Shellie Johnson had 23 points as the Spartans (10-7) won a Blue Ridge District game over the Wildcats (5-13).

Salem used a 26-11 spurt in the middle two quarters to take control. \

James River 54

Highland 28

MONTEREY - The visiting Knights jumped to a 14-5 lead over the Rams after one quarter and coasted the rest of the way in a Pioneer District game.

James River (10-8, 8-2) was led by Angie Johnson's 16 points, and Teresa Hickman added 13.
