AUTOZONE DENIED SPOT ON BRAMBLETON

AutoZone's push onto the turf of competitor Advance Auto was slowed temporarily this week when its request to build an auto parts store in Roanoke County was denied.

AutoZone, a Memphis-based company, has plans for at least three stores in the Roanoke Valley - two in Roanoke and one in Salem.

The company was looking at a fourth site in the 3500 block of Brambleton Avenue Southwest in Roanoke County.

But nearby residents opposed the request on the grounds that an auto parts store would be incompatible with the lot, which they say serves as a buffer to the commercial sprawl of Brambleton Avenue.

On Tuesday, AutoZone sought to delay action so it could change its site plan to address neighbors' concerns.

However, the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 to deny the rezoning request.

The board also zoned the 1-acre property for commercial use no more intense than professional offices.

Since 1979, neighbors have been fighting to limit use of the corner lot, which now contains a house used for a home interior business.
