WINDSOR HILLS RACE MUDDIES TOES

Roanoke County Supervisor Lee Eddy said Thursday that voters deserve to know who is bankrolling his opponent's expensive direct-mail campaign.

"It makes you wonder if there is some special plot afoot, or if there is some sugar daddy in the bushes who doesn't want people to know who he is," Eddy said.

Democrat Lee Garrett has reported raising nearly $12,000, with more than half of the money coming from the Roanoke County Democratic Committee.

But Democrats refuse to say who is funneling money to Garrett through the committee.

"We don't want to divulge that," said Carolyn Flippen, the county Democratic chairwoman, who works as a legal assistant to Del. Richard Cranwell, D-Roanoke County. "We don't have to, so we're not going to."

Garrett, a former WSLS-TV announcer, is seeking to regain the Windsor Hills seat that he lost to Eddy four years ago.

The Democrats have targeted Windsor Hills in an effort to regain a 3-2 majority on the Board of Supervisors.

In a flier that arrived in mailboxes Friday, Garrett sought to portray Eddy as someone who votes against everything - funding for the Explore Park, Spring Hollow Reservoir and the transfer of law enforcement duties from the Sheriff's Department to the Police Department.

The flier - the fourth voters have received from Garrett - also pictures an empty chair symbolizing what Garrett claims is Eddy's habit of abstaining.

"It's time to give Windsor Hills its voice and vote back!" the flier says.

Eddy, a self-employed electrical engineer, responded with a mailer of his own that addresses, point by point, the charges leveled by Garrett.

On abstentions, Eddy said he could not make up his mind in a few instances when staff had not provided him with enough information to make an informed decision.

"Does Lee Garrett believe that good decisions can be made without complete background information?" the mailer asks.
