BASSETT CLINCHES TIE IN PIEDMONT

Bassett used a 61-39 victory over Gretna to clinch at least a tie for the Piedmont District regular-season girls' basketball championship Thursday night.

The top-ranked team in Timesland picked apart the Hawks' zone defense for a big fourth quarter that secured the victory.

Bassett (18-0 overall, 16-0 district) led 40-31 after three quarters but outscored Gretna 21-8 in the final period.

Bassett's Aimee Barker led all scorers with 21 points.

Kim Hairston and Lori Wimbush added 11 for the Bengals. \

The Highlanders took an early lead and went on to clinch a tie for the Pioneer regular-season district title. Glenvar (15-3, 10-0) bolted to a 27-13 halftime lead, but the Cougars (6-10, 6-4) cut the deficit to 31-23 midway through the third quarter. Then, the Highlanders used a full-court press to go on a 10-0 run. Glenvar's Marilea Hale led all scorers with 20 points. \

MONTEREY - The visiting Knights jumped to a 14-5 lead after one quarter, and coasted the rest of the way in a Pioneer distict game. James River (10-8, 8-2) was led by Angie Johnson's 16 points, and Teresa Hickman added 13. Amy Arbaugh led the Rams (4-12, 2-9) with 13 points. \
