WELSH SEMIFINALIST FOR AWARD

University of Virginia football coach George Welsh has been selected as one of 10 semifinalists for the 1993 Coach of the Year award by Football News.

Joining Welsh as semifinalists are Florida State's Bobby Bowden, Auburn's Terry Bowden, Ohio State's John Cooper, UCLA's Terry Donahue, Notre Dame's Lou Holtz, West Virginia's Don Nehlen, Nebraska's Tom Osborne, Louisville's Howard Schnellenberger and Kansas State's Bill Snyder.

The list will be narrowed to three coaches Nov. 19. The winner be announced Nov. 29.

Under Welsh, the Cavaliers have posted a 6-1 record this year, and are ranked 16th in the Associated Press poll and 14th in the USA Today/CNN Coaches' Poll.
