GALAX WHIPS SHAWSVILLE

Randy Ashworth carried 23 times for 127 yards and two touchdowns to spark Galax to a 26-7 victory over Shawsville in a Mountain Empire District football game Friday night.

Bobby Mellon added 98 rushing yards for Galax (2-6 overall, 2-4 district).

Shawsville's record fell to 2-7, 1-6. \

Auburn 7

Bland County 3

BLAND - Danny Dickerson's 3-yard touchdown run around left end with 6:52 remaining gave the Eagles the Mountain Empire District triumph over the Bears.

The touchdown capped a 15-play, 80-yard drive that was aided by three Bland County penalties.

Bland County (2-7, 0-7) scored first on a 38-yard field goal by Monty Matthews in the second quarter.

Auburn is 3-5, 3-4. \

George Wythe 33

Carroll County 7

HILLSVILLE - The Maroons ran their record to 8-0 with the non-district victory over the Cavaliers.

Randy Blevins returned a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown and ran 5 yards with a fumble recovery for another score. He also intercepted a pass. George Wythe had three interceptions, two by Jeffery Bourne, who rushed three times for 78 yards and a touchdown.

George Wythe took command with a 14-points in the third quarter.

Carroll County fell to 4-5.

Fort Chiswell 0

INDEPENDENCE - The Blue Devils took command in the second half to chalk up a Mountain Empire District victory over the Pioneers.

Grayson County (5-3, 4-2) gained 232 of its 313 yards in the third and fourth quarters while limiting Fort Chiswell (3-5, 3-3) to 52 yards.

The Blue Devils got all the points they would need on a 42-yard touchdown pass from Bobby Cheeks to Shane Griffith in the third quarter.

Staunton River 6

BEDFORD - Eight players scored for the Minutemen as they romped past the Golden Eagles in the Seminole District.

Cory Gilmore got things started with an 80-yard kickoff return, and quarterback Mike Padgett threw two touchdown passes as Liberty improved its record to 6-2 overall and in the district.

Staunton River (0-8, 0-8) was outgained 366 total yards to 109. \
