FURMAN BLANKS KEYDETS 24-0

Furman overcame five turnovers in a 24-0 victory over Southern Conference rival VMI on Saturday, giving the Paladins their first shutout in 64 games.

Furman (4-3-1 overall, 3-2-0 Southern) held the Keydets (1-7, 1-4) to 147 yards. The Paladins gained 492, including 328 on the ground.

The mistakes began early. The Keydets' Terry Tucker forced a Rod Green fumble on the VMI 7-yard line to stop the game's opening series, but the Paladins kept the Keydets from capitalizing.

Two minutes later, Furman quarterback Philly Jones scored the game's first touchdown on a 15-yard run.

The Paladins scored again in the third period on Heath Brownstead's 1-yard run as they took a 14-0 lead. The touchdown capped an eight-play, 49-yard drive.

In the fourth quarter, Furman's Jim Ritcher kicked a 28-yard field goal to make it 17-0.

The game was capped by an 11-yard pass from Braniff Bonaventure to Jim Cole.

"It's good to get a win," said Jimmy Satterfield, Furman's coach. "Any time you get a shutout your defense has obviously played well."

Satterfield also had praise for Bonaventure, who replaced Jones at quarterback late in the game. Bonaventure's pass to Cole was the first touchdown throw of his career.

"It was a good game for him because he had some good execution and he had a chance to get some good playing time," Satterfield said.

Jim Shuck, VMI's coach, said his team's performance was frustrating.

"We had our chances and didn't convert," Shuck said. "We just have to become a tougher offensive team."

Sophomore Leonard McClarty led Furman with 124 yards rushing, the first 100-plus game of his career. \
