TRIBE TOPPLES DUKES 31-26

Derek Fitzgerald rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns Saturday and William and Mary overcame a James Madison touchdown on the opening kickoff for a 31-26 victory over the Dukes.

Ranked No. 13 in Division I-AA, the Tribe (6-2 overall, 4-1 Yankee Conference) won its fifth consecutive game.

James Madison (4-4, 2-3) went up 7-0 when Dwight Robinson returned the opening kickoff 90 yards in a driving rain.

The Dukes struggled the rest of the way. They were held to 12 first downs and 40 passing yards and failed to convert nine of their 10 third downs.

William and Mary went ahead to stay on Fitzgerald's 3-yard touchdown run that made it 24-20 with 9:59 left in the third quarter. Troy Keen's 1-yard touchdown plunge on the Tribe's next possession made it a 14-point lead.

James Madison closed the scoring on Steve Agee's third 1-yard touchdown plunge of the game, this one with 5:16 left. The Dukes did not threaten again.

William and Mary, which entered the game with a defense ranked No. 1 in the Yankee Conference and No. 12 in Division I-AA, held the Dukes to 65 total yards in the second half. The Tribe also held James Madison receiver David McLeod without a reception for the first time since the 1991 playoffs.

James Madison gave up 204 rushing yards and allowed William and Mary's Shawn Knight to complete 12 of 19 passes 194 yards.

Charleston Southern 6

LYNCHBURG - Antwan Chiles completed 16 of 21 passes for 198 yards and four touchdowns as the Flames defeated Charleston Southern to break a four-game losing streak.

Liberty (4-4) also dominated on the ground with 257 yards compared with 93 rushing yards for Charleston Southern (3-6), which is in its first season of Division I-AA competition. Liberty's Adrian Cherry rushed for 161 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries.

Charleston Southern scored its points in the first half on field goals of 26 and 28 yards by Dennis Decker.

Maurice Jones led Liberty with 83 yards on six catches, including a 10-yard touchdown.

Richmond 3

RICHMOND - Wilbur Gilliard rushed 24 times for 252 yards and touchdowns dives of 3 and 1 yards as the Huskies won a Yankee Conference game for their eighth consecutive victory over the Spiders.

Connecticut (5-4, 4-2) rolled up 330 yards on the ground while limiting Richmond (5-3, 3-3) to 135 yards rushing.

Richmond quarterback Greg Lilly was 7-for-14 for 99 yards passing in the first half before injuring a shoulder. Sophomore Jason Gabrels went 4-for-8 for 35 yards.

Kevin Longacre kicked a 26-yard field goal early in the second half for Richmond.

\ Virginia State 41, Virginia Union 6: At Ettrick, Virginia State's Gregory Clark went 20-for-37 for 336 yards passing and four touchdowns and ran for a touchdown as the Trojans (8-1, 6-1) rolled over the Panthers (2-6-1, 2-3-1) in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association game.

In the first half, Clark ran for a 15-yard touchdown and threw touchdown passes of 11 yards to Remus James and 76 yards to Derrick Miller.

Virginia Union's points came on Donald Ruffin's 9-yard pass to Stacy Graves in the third quarter.

\ Davidson 21, Hampden-Sydney 14: At Davidson, N.C., Shane Mills scored on a 1-yard run with 4:38 to play to give the Wildcats (5-3) the winning margin over the Tigers (5-3) in a non-conference game. Mills' touchdown, his second of the game, was set up by Jason Branch's 21-yard interception return. The Tigers tied the score at 14 with two third-quarter touchdowns.

\ Clinch Valley 49, Tennessee Wesleyan 14: At Wise, Durmia Marshall led a 420-yard rushing attack that carried the Highland Cavaliers to their school-record fifth victory. Marshall ran for 146 yards and a touchdown and Jerry Castle added 57 yards and three touchdowns. The Highland Cavaliers' rushing yardage total was a single-game record. Clinch Valley (5-3), in its third year of football, also set game records with 30 first downs and its final points total. The scoring total broke the record of 45 points, set against Bethany last year and tied last week against Bethel. Tennessee Wesleyan (1-7) was held to 47 rushing yards.

\ Hampton 40, Elizabeth City State 0: At Hampton, Matt Montgomery threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns as the Pirates (9-0, 7-0), ranked No. 3 in Division II, rolled over the Vikings (1-8, 1-7) in a CIAA game. The Pirates compiled 517 total yards.

\ Kentucky State 26, Norfolk State 24: At Frankford, Ky., Mark Battle's 3-yard touchdown run with a minute left lifted the Thorobreds (1-8) over the Spartans (3-5-1) for their first victory. On first down from the Spartans' 44-yard line, Kentucky State's Terry Singleton intercepted a Kermit Buggs pass at the 20.

\ Newport News 60, Gallaudet 7: At Newport News, Jermaine Bellamy ran for 112 yards on 17 carries and scored four touchdowns as Newport News (5-2-1) defeated Gallaudet (0-8). Newport News rolled up 239 yards rushing while holding Gallaudet to minus-12 yards on the ground.

\ Randolph-Macon 16, Guilford 13: At Greensboro, N.C., Garry Carter caught two touchdown passes as the Yellow Jackets (5-2-1, 3-0) overcame a 10-0 first-quarter deficit to defeat the Quakers (1-7, 0-4) in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game. Dexter Hurt added 136 yards rushing for Randolph-Macon. The Yellow Jackets tied the score with 10 second-quarter points, including Carter's 5-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Bush. Steve Bryant's second field goal gave Guilford a 13-10 lead late in the quarter before Bush found Carter again.
