Richmond golfers David Partridge and Greg Bales gave the Virginias a 74-70 victory when they won the final hole of the final match to earn a tie in alternate-shot play.
Galax's Vinny Giles, who was 18 years old when a Virginias squad last won in the Carolinas in 1961, completed an unbeaten year in team play. Giles served as captain of the U.S. Walker Cup squad and the Virginia State Golf Association's Sumner Cup squad before playing on the Virginias team.
In Sunday's action, he combined with Mike Smith to tie Bill Smunk and David Strawn 3-3. Roanoke's Ned Baber and his seniors partner, Frank Summers, defeated Bill Cox and Bob Murray 4-2.

In Charlottesville, Erin Riddle scored two goals as Virginia upset 18th-ranked Maryland 4-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference women's soccer.
Kim Conway added a goal and an assist for the Cavaliers (8-8-2 overall, 1-2-1 ACC). Stefanie Papageorge scored the goal for Maryland (13-4-2, 0-3-1).
The teams will meet again at 2 p.m. Friday in the first round of the ACC tournament in Raleigh, N.C.
In Ferrum, four players scored as the Ferrum College women's soccer team beat Greensboro 4-1 in a Dixie Conference match, the season finale for the Panthers.
Ferrum set a school record for victories in its 12-5-1 season; it finished 3-2 in the league. Greensboro is 5-10, 1-4.
In Clemson, S.C., freshmen Chiragi Patel and Chad Toleafoa and sophomore Adam Gottfried each won two of three weekend matches to lead Virginia Tech at the Clemson Invitational men's tennis tournament.
In Hot Springs, 2 inches of snow that blanketed The Homestead's Lower Cascades course Saturday night and Sunday morning forced officials to cancel the final round of the James Madison University Invitational.
Penn State and Princeton, tied at 300 on Saturday after the first round, were declared co-winners of the 20th annual event. Eighteen teams participated.
Ted Wrubleski of Penn State, who carded a 1-under par 71 on Saturday, was awarded the individual title.
