WASHINGTON - Labor Secretary Robert Reich indicated Monday that he thinks payroll employment in October will rise "at least" as much as the September gain of 156,000 jobs.
A Labor Department spokesman said Reich's comment on ABC's "Good Morning America" was a reference to the October jobs report to be released Friday.
Reich said U.S. job growth is beginning to recover. But he cautioned that long-term unemployment remains "very high." The California economy remains "in the doldrums," and many cities are experiencing "extraordinarily high levels of unemployment, and we can't sit back and must simply hope for the best."
