SWAT is sponsored during the YMCA season by the Pulaski YMCA and is made up of swimmers from throughout the New River Valley.

"This was a very solid performance against one of the strongest teams in our league," said coach BILL BEECHER. "This is a result of good depth in all the age groups and all of the strokes. I think we're going to have a very good season."

\ UPCOMING: With snow already in the air, it's the time of the year for recreation sports to move indoors. And that means basketball.

Both Christiansburg and Blacksburg have started registration for youth basketball.

In Christiansburg, there are four leagues for boys and four for girls: Pee Wee (ages 7-8 and all first graders), Minor League (ages 9-10), Major League (ages 11-12) and Senior League (ages 13-14). The senior leagues also include 12-year-old seventh-graders for the boys league and participants cannot be in ninth grade in the girls league or playing eighth-grade basketball in the boys league.

The cost is $20 for town residents and $25 for participants who live outside of town but inside the Christiansburg school district. Registration continues through Nov. 30. For more information, call the Christiansburg Parks and Recreation Department at 382-2349.

In Blacksburg, there will be boys and girls high school age and sandlot (ages 9-14) basketball leagues. Registration continues through Nov. 19. For more information, call the Blacksburg Department of Parks and Recreation at 961-1135.

Blacksburg also will have another sport on its winter season schedule - wrestling. Registration continues through Nov. 19 for the sandlot wrestling program for youths ages 9-14. For more information, call the Blacksburg Department of Parks and Recreation at 961-1135.
