A urine test at the doctor's office, costing only a few dollars, can detect 75 percent or more of all infections of the sexually transmitted disease, which strikes 4 million Americans annually.
Follow-up laboratory tests, also relatively inexpensive, can detect all false positive results and eliminate unnecessary treatment.
"We suggest that routine performance of a [simple urine test] in asymptomatic, sexually active, adolescent males and young men be considered during all routine examinations," Drs. Mark D. Aronson and Russell S. Phillips wrote in an editorial in today's Journal of the American Medical Association.
