JAMES RIVER SLOWS GLENVAR

James River shot 74 percent from the floor and played stout fourth-quarter defense to beat Glenvar 48-43 on Tuesday night, denying the Highlanders a chance to clinch the Pioneer District title.

The Knights (11-8 overall, 9-2 district) were led by Angie Johnson's 17 points. She made seven of 13 shots from the low post and James River went 22-for-31 overall.

Marilea Hale led Glenvar (15-4, 10-1) with 20 points.

It was the Knights' first victory over Glenvar during the regular season in memory. \

Rockbridge County 29

William Byrd breezed to the early lead and coasted to the Blue Ridge District victory over the Wildcats in Vinton behind Cathy Smith's 13 points and Nicole Sarver's 12.

Rockbridge County (5-13, 0-8) was led by Randi Sorrells' eight points. William Byrd improved its record to 14-5, 7-2.

The Mountaineers raced to an 11-point lead in the first quarter and held off the Spartans the rest of the way to earn a Blue Ridge District victory.

NEW CASTLE - Chrissy Robertson scored 25 points and the Rockets held off the Fighting Blues in the Pioneer District.

Robertson hit 10 of 11 free throws as Craig County (9-9, 6-6) preserved the victory from the line. Bonnie Boardwine added 15 points for the Rockets.

Parry McCluer (5-12, 4-7) got double-figure scoring from four players, but the rest of the Fighting Blues were shut out. Stephanie Rhodes and Carrie Coleman had 11 points each, and Crystal Humphries and Misty Snider added 10 apiece. \
