Derek Wayne Grubb was hit in the pelvic area by a shot fired from a .50-caliber muzzle-loading rifle, according to Game Warden Jim Anders.
The injury cut an artery in Grubb's leg. Because of the rough terrain where the injury happened, near the county landfill, it took rescue workers almost 20 minutes to reach him, Anders said.
He was pronounced dead at Wythe County Community Hospital.
Anders said the shot was fired by Clayton Ray Waller, 18, of Wytheville. He said Waller was not aware of Grubb's presence until he heard a yell after he fired. He immediately went for help.
The victim was not wearing blaze orange.
