U.N. VOTES AGAINST CUBA EMBARGO

Key allies snubbed the United States by siding with Fidel Castro in a largely symbolic vote Wednesday to end the longstanding American embargo of Cuba.

It was the second consecutive year that the General Assembly, in a nonbinding but forceful resolution, repudiated the 33-year-old embargo and urged nations to ignore it.

Support for the Cuban-sponsored resolution also increased dramatically this year over last year.

The vote in the 184-nation General Assembly was 88-4, with 57 abstentions. Some nations did not vote at all. Voting against the resolution were the U.S., Israel, Albania and Paraguay.

The vote last year, when the assembly had 179 members, was 59-3, with 71 abstentions.

Britain, Germany, Italy, Canada, Russia and Japan abstained.

France and most Latin American countries voted in favor of the Cuban resolution. Austria, China, Spain, Sweden, Australia, India and others also supported it.
