Historic neighborhood wins governor's award

Old Southwest Inc. received the 1993 Governor's Environmental Excellence Award for historic preservation.

The award is designed to recognize outstanding stewardship activities that have contributed to preserving Virginia's natural and historic resources.

Old Southwest Inc. started in 1974 with restoration of one of Roanoke's oldest neighborhoods. The restoration led to a 20-year plan to revitalize the entire area.

National society will honor philanthropists

The First Virginia Chapter of the National Society of Fund Raising Executives will honor this year's outstanding philanthropists with a fund-raising institute and recognition luncheon on Tuesday at the Holiday Inn-Tanglewood.

The outstanding philanthropist, young philanthropist, volunteer fund raiser, corporation and fund raising executive will be announced as part of the National Philanthropy Day celebration.

The Roanoke-based First Virginia chapter is one of two in the state and includes 52 members from all over Virginia.

The fund-raising institute runs from 8:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. and costs $60, including lunch, and the luncheon, with keynote speaker Beverly Fitzpatrick, is from 12:15 p.m. to 2 p.m. and costs $15.
