GLENVAR CAPTURES PIONEER DISTRICT TITLE

Toree Morris scored 16 points, including two 3-pointers, as Glenvar beat visiting Highland County 62-26 Thursday night to capture their 10th consecutive Pioneer District regular-season girls' basketball title.

The Highlanders (16-4 overall, 11-1 in the district) blew open the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Rams 22-4 en route to the easy victory. Marilea Hale scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Amanda Kennedy chipped in 12 points for Glenvar.

Glenvar held all Highland County scorers in single digits. The Rams are 4-16, 2-10.

\ Laurel Park 68\ Tunstall 54

DRY FORK - Torsheda Dillard pumped in 22 points and the Lancers built a 15-point lead at halftime to win a Piedmont District game.

Latonya Martin added 13 points and Tanesha Hairston 11 for Laurel Park (13-7, 12-6).

Tunstall (3-17) got a game-high 24 points from Melissa Dixon. Kim Rich added 11 points.

\ Shawsville 53\ Grayson County 36

SHAWSVILLE - The Shawnees pulled away in the fourth quarter for a Mountain Empire District victory.

Kelley Ryan had 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Robin Burdette added 11 points and 10 rebounds for Shawsville (13-7, 13-5). The Shawnees broke open a close game by winning the fourth quarter 19-6.

Grayson County (3-17, 3-15) got 13 points from Tia Stewart.

\ Alleghany 56\ Rockbridge County 35

LEXINGTON - The Mountaineers used a big third quarter to pull away for the Blue Ridge District victory.

Alleghany (12-8, 4-6) trailed the Wildcats (5-15, 0-10) 15-14 at halftime, but blew open the game with a 24-11 third quarter. Alleghany's Nicole Curtis led all scorers with 17 points, and teammate Tricia Rice added 14.

Craig County 48\ Bath County 41

NEW CASTLE - The Rockets' press helped them to a huge fourth quarter and a win in a Pioneer District contest.

Craig County (6-12, 5-7) trailed 37-31 after three quarters, but used a stifling press to cause seven Bath County turnovers in the final period.

Chrissy Robertson led the Rockets with 15 points, and Bonnie Boardwine added 11 - five in the final period.

Bath County is 3-15 and 1-11.

Fort Chiswell 68\ Bland 27

MAX MEADOWS - Chasity Wright scored 22 points to lead the Pioneers to a Mountain Empire District victory over the winless Rockets.

Fort Chiswell (9-11, 9-9) took a 37-13 halftime lead and coasted to the win. Anesha Marshall chipped in 12 points for the Pioneers.

Rachel French scored 18 points to lead Bland (0-20, 0-18).

\ James River 47 Covington 38

BUCHANAN - The Knights struggled from the floor, but managed to do enough to get a Pioneer District victory.

James River (12-8, 10-2) shot 20-of-58 from the floor, and needed a strong third quarter to put Covington (7-11, 7-5) away.

Camille Arbogast led the Knights with 10 points, and teammates Kara Mundy and Angie Johnson added nine each.

\ George Wythe 41\ Marion 37

WYTHEVILLE - Stacy Green scored her 1,000th career point and the Maroons won the fourth quarter to earn a non-district victory.

Green, a four-year player, finished with 24 points, seven in the decisive fourth quarter. She has 1,016 points for her career. Lisa Garland added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Maroons (7-13).

Marion got 10 points from Julie Pickle.

\ Tuesday's game

Patrick County 76, Laurel Park 73: The Cougars sank 20 of 28 free throws en route to a Piedmont District victory over the Lancers in Stuart.

Amy Nelson scored 19 to lead Patrick County's balanced scoring attack. Danielle Clark and Gerena Hylton each had 14 points and Charity Hagwood chipped in 13 for the Cougars (6-14 overall, 6-11 in the district).

Tanesha Hairston scored 29 points and Toy Perkins added 24 for Laurel Park (12-7, 11-6). The Lancers also got 12 points from Torsheda Dillard.
