ALL-MALE CLUB LOSES U.S. OPEN SECTIONAL EVENT

The United States Golf Association has stripped the Sharon Golf Club of a 1994 U.S. Open sectional qualifier because of its all-male membership.

The Sharon Center, Ohio, course has been a qualifying site for 10 years, but the USGA has increasingly enforced its policy of not staging events at courses that bar women or minorities.

The 36-hole sectional qualifier will be held June 6 at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pa., already the site of one of the East Coast's top amateur tournaments, the Sunnehanna Amateur.

The U.S. Open will be held at Oakmont Country Club in suburban Pittsburgh on June 16-19.
