STABLES, Opie Hampton, 77, of 125 North Street, Rich Creek, Va., died
Thursday morning, November 4, 1993, in the Giles Memorial Hospital in
Pearisburg, Va. A lifelong resident of Giles County, he was born at Narrows on
December 21, 1915, and was the son of the late James and Rosa Payne Stables.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Marshall Stables, and a sister, Lena
Riddle. He was a member of the Rich Creek United Methodist Church in Rich
Creek, Va. for forty-five years, where he served on the church board. He was a
member of the Narrows Chapter A.A.R.P. #502 and was a retired employee of the
Hoechst/Celanese Fibers Company Plant of Narrows, where he was a member of the
CELCO Retired Sunshine Club. Mr. Stables was a veteran of World War II. He was
a member of the V. F. W. Post #6000 of Narrows and was a member of the
Disabled American Veterans. He was a charter member of the Rich Creek
Volunteer Fire Department. He is survived by his wife Velma Kight Stables of
Rich Creek; a son, Douglas Stables of Chester, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law,
Marshall and Myra Stables of Erwin, Tenn; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn
and Glen Edwards of Martinsville, Va.; four sisters, Clara Mabe and Dorothy
Blevins, Hopewell, Va., Lucile Taylor and Ruth Riddle, both of Galion, Ohio;
three granddaughters, Marianne Stables, Alissa Stables and Kimberly Stables.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Rich Creek United Methodist
Church in Rich Creek, Va., with the Rev. Jeffrey C. Callahan officiating.
Burial will follow in the Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Riffe's Funeral Service in
Narrows is handling all arrangements and will be open for friends to call
after 1 p.m. Saturday. Those who wish to meet the family may call at the
funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday evening.
