LaRouche associate's conviction upheld

RICHMOND - The state Supreme Court on Friday upheld the conviction of a former Lyndon LaRouche associate who argued that prosecutors relied on testimony he gave under a promise of immunity.

Richard Welsh said his conviction was tainted because he had been given immunity for his testimony against other associates of LaRouche, a political extremist serving a prison term for fraud.

Welsh, an accountant for LaRouche's Leesburg-based organization, was convicted of felony fraud and three misdemeanors for lying to prospective lenders about the group's finances. He was sentenced to 75 days in jail and community service.

\ Pulaski manslaughter upheld on close vote

RICHMOND - The state Supreme Court on Friday voted 4-3 to uphold the involuntary manslaughter conviction and five-year sentence given to Lisa Gail Gallimore in Pulaski County.

Evidence showed that in January 1990 she fabricated a kidnapping story that led to a scuffle in which James Glen Branscome was accidentally shot by Keith Southern, who pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

The majority found that Gallimore's negligence led to the shooting. But the dissenters said "the killing resulted from a bizarre set of circumstances remote in time and space from the criminally negligent conduct of the defendant."

\ Loaded gun found inside Hampton jail

HAMPTON - Hampton jail officials are trying to determine how a loaded .22-caliber handgun was smuggled into the jail.

An inmate told authorities he found the weapon under his mattress Wednesday, jail administrator James E. Adams Jr. said. Adams said the gun was not fired in the facility.

The inmate's bed was on the third floor, in an area of the jail occupied by more than double the 11 inmates it is designed to house.

\ Mental hospital regains lost accreditation

RICHMOND - The state-run Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg has been granted full accreditation for three years, Virginia's mental health commissioner announced Friday.

The decision by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations amounts to a reinstatement of the 800-bed mental health facility's accreditation.

The hospital lost its standing after a 1991 surprise review sparked by news reports alleging patient abuse. The withdrawal did not affect day-to-day operations but threatened the facility's standing with Medicaid and Medicare.

\ Disaster officials to revisit Petersburg

RICHMOND - Federal disaster relief officials, asked by President Clinton to reconsider their decision denying aid to tornado-damaged Petersburg, have scheduled another visit to the city Tuesday.

Gov. Douglas Wilder announced Friday that a three-member team from the Federal Emergency Management Agency will go to Petersburg, tour the damaged areas and review the state's request for a disaster declaration.

State officials determined that the Aug. 6 tornado caused $50 million in damage in 19 localities, including $40 million in Petersburg and Colonial Heights.

The state's first request for assistance was denied.

\ Autopsy shows boy's death was accidental

CHARLOTTESVILLE - Preliminary results of an autopsy show the death of a 15-year-old Esmont boy this week was accidental, Albemarle County police said.

Michael L. Snead's body was found in a ravine Wednesday several days after he was reported missing.

Snead knew the woods near his house well and often walked through them, police said.
