MAROONS TAKE DISTRICT TITLE

Northwood got George Wythe's attention Friday night before the Maroons pulled away in the second half to keep their unbeaten record intact and clinch the Hogoheegee District football title.

Northwood (4-6 overall, 2-5 district) led 3-0 at halftime on a 25-yard field goal by John Griffin and stretched its lead to 10-0 in the third quarter on a 17-yard Griffin touchdown reception.

George Wythe (9-0, 6-0) roared back to take the lead on two third-quarter touchdown runs by Randy Blevins, who carried 10 times for 126 yards. Chris Dickinson had 12 carries for 108 yards and one touchdown for George Wythe, which had 421 yards in total offense, 410 on the ground.

Northwood capitalized on a George Wythe fumble, one of three for the Maroons, and an interception for two late touchdowns after George Wythe had gone ahead 26-10.

Griffin carried six times for 49 yards, caught two passes for 29 yards, completed three of four passes and kicked a field goal and an extra point.

Fieldale-Collinsville 0

MARTINSVILLE - Quarterback Darrell Wilson ran for three touchdowns as the Lancers (6-3, 5-3) thumped the Cavaliers (2-7, 2-6) in a Piedmont District game.

Running back DeShannon Adams carried 15 times for 163 yards, including a 33-yard touchdown run, to spark the Laurel Park offense. \

Chatham 28

Bassett 6

CHATHAM - Dereck Logan rushed for 109 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries as the Cavaliers defeated the Bengals in a Piedmont District game.

Chatham (6-3, 5-3) took a 14-0 first-quarter lead with Maurice Chalmers' two touchdown passes. Chalmers also ran for 85 yards.

Bassett (3-6, 2-6) closed the gap to 14-6 at halftime off a Joe Haynes touchdown pass, but Logan scored twice in the second half, ending the Bengals' comeback bid.

Bassett was held to 51 yards rushing on 22 carries. \

Covington 30

James River 12

COVINGTON - Tom Luckett ran for 129 yards and two touchdowns to spark the Cougars to their first win of the season in the Pioneer District game.

Covington (1-8, 1-3) ran up 349 yards total offense to 209 for James River (2-7, 1-3).

Mike Barber figured in two Covington touchdowns, scoring on a 1-yard run and tossing a 20-yard touchdown pass.

James River's points came on Wesley Cox's 23-yard run and Shahan Burrell's 8-yard scamper. \

Lebanon 21

Rural Retreat 7 RURAL RETREAT - Nathan McGlothlin scored on runs of

70 and 3 runs as the Pioneers (7-2, 4-2) took over second-place in the Hogoheegee District by defeating the Indians (4-3, 6-3).

McGlothlin had 10 carries for 94 yards, and Lebanon rushed for 274 yards as a team.

The Pioneers had 317 yards in total offense, compared with 189 for the Indians, who lost two fumbles.

Kevin Burton scored for Rural Retreat on a 35-yard run. \
