UVA REACHES ACC FINAL IN SOCCER

Brian Bates scored on a penalty kick midway through the second half as Virginia edged Duke 1-0 on Friday in a semifinal of the ACC men's soccer tournament in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Cavaliers will seek their third consecutive ACC tournament championship Sunday, when they face Clemson, a 4-2 winner over North Carolina.

Virginia goalkeeper Jeff Causey made four saves to become UVa's all-time leader. Causey has 226 saves, surpassing Bill Wallace's record of 222, set in 1981.

In Raleigh, N.C., Erin Riddle scored six minutes into the match, and Virginia went on to beat Maryland 3-1 in the opening round of the ACC womens' soccer tournament.

Liz Kelly and Kristen Dimillio also scored for the Cavaliers, who will play top-ranked North Carolina at noon today. The Tar Heels beat Virginia 2-1 during the regular season.

For the second year in a row and the third time overall, North Carolina's Mia Hamm has been chosen the ACC women's player of the year. Teammate Debbie Keller was chosen rookie of the year in the coaches' voting, and Anson Dorrance of North Carolina was named coach of the year.

Frankie Pennington of Lexington won the non-winners' race and Tony McGuire grabbed the pole for today's Thunder Road 500 at Franklin County Speedway.

Pennington beat out Tracey Owens of Lynchburg and Ronnie Thomas of Christiansburg for the victory.

McGuire grabbed the pole for today's Late Model Stock feature, a 200-lap event paying $3,000 to winner, with a qualifying lap of 14.21 seconds and an average of 97.6 mph.

Hank Turman of Dugspur won the Street Stock qualifying race; Carlton Clark of Boones Mill finished first in the Mini Stock; Kevin Ransom won the Pure Stock Division; and Paul St. Clair of Collinsville won the Rookie Division.

The gates open at 11 a.m. today. Qualifying practice starts at 1 p.m., and racing begins at 3 p.m.

In Manassas, 1992 State Amateur champion Allen Barber of Newport News fired a 2-under-par 70 in cold, rainy conditions to take a two-shot lead in the 14th VSGA Mid-Amateur men's golf championship at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club.

Reigning State Am champion David Partridge of Richmond, Tom Orr of Midlothian, Steve Isaacs of Richmond, Tim Olsen of Fairfax Station and Scott Inman of Springfield are tied for second at 72 in the 54-hole tournament.

Area players and their first-round scores included: 1993 Greater Blacksburg Open champion Mike Krulich of Bluefield (74); Blacksburg's Bruce Heterick (79); Roanoke's Ted Comer (79); Lexington's J.W. Entsminger (83); Blacksburg's David Chalmers (84); Roanoke's Barry Wolfe (88); and Roanoke's Jeff Lynch (90).

North Carolina's reigning NCAA championship basketball team has received an oral commitment from Shammond Williams, a 6-foot-2 point guard from Greenville, S.C., by way of Fork Union Military Academy.

Williams picked Carolina over South Carolina, the only other school he visited. A second Fork Union player, 6-10 J.J. Lucas from Middletown, Ohio, selected Vanderbilt over Ohio State.

Lucas' father, Jerry, played at Ohio State and in the NBA.

In Cincinnati, K.J. Hippensteel, 13, of Roanoke won once and lost once at the McDonald's Junior Invitational tennis tournament. The North Cross student lost his first-round national USTA boys' 14 singles match to Hu Nakamura of New York, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, then defeated Brian Cowman of Charlotte, N.C., 6-4, 6-4 in the consolation round. Hippensteel , coached by Hunting Hills pro John Barker, plays again at 8 a.m. today. He also has been invited to the 22nd annual USTA Boys' 14 National Indoor Championship at Chicago from Nov. 24-29.

The time of the Virginia Tech men's soccer home game Sunday against South Florida has been moved up from 2 p.m. to 1 p.m.
