DEWEESE LEADS CAVS TO VICTORY

Chris Deweese returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown and scored on a 58-yard run with nine minutes remaining in the game as host Lord Botetourt beat William Byrd 19-6 in a Blue Ridge District football game Friday night.

Deweese's second-quarter punt return gave the Cavaliers (6-3 overall, 1-3 in the district) a 12-6 lead. Botetourt then iced the game in the fourth quarter when Deweese broke a 58-yard run for another touchdown.

Daren Harris put the Cavaliers on the board first, scoring on a run from 1 yard, but Byrd's Jason Criss made the score 6-6 when he scampered in from the 7-yard line.

Botetourt's Chad Sayers rushed for 64 yards on 17 carries.

Shannon Gray led Byrd (4-5, 1-4) with 64 yards rushing on 13 attempts.

\ Covington 30

James River 12

COVINGTON - Tom Luckett ran for 129 yards and two touchdowns to spark the Cougars to their first victory of the season in the Pioneer District game.

Covington (1-8, 1-3) ran up 349 yards total offense and held James River (2-7, 1-3) to 209.

Mike Barber figured in two Cougars touchdowns, scoring on a 1-yard run and tossing a 20-yard touchdown pass.

James River's points came on Wesley Cox's 23-yard run and Shahan Burrell's 8-yard scamper. \

Brookville 35

Staunton River 0

MONETA - Timmy Clark rushed for 251 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries as the Bees whipped the Golden Eagles in a Seminole District game.

Staunton River (0-9, 0-9) was held to 113 yards total offense.

Brookville (7-2, 7-2) raced to a 28-0 halftime lead and coasted.

The Eagles fumbled six times, three of which the Bees recovered.

Jeff English led Staunton River in rushing with 51 yards on 11 carries.

FRONT ROYAL - Chris Hershman picked off three passes and scored two touchdowns to almost single-handedly thwart the Celtics' bid for a .500 season as the hosts won a Virginia Independent Conference game.

Hershman caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Brad Bombino in the first quarter and returned a fumble 40 yards for a score in the final period to lead Randolph-Macon (5-3 overall, 3-2 VIC).

Tony Boone also was a factor for the hosts. The freshman running back from New York City rushed eight times and gained 103 yards, 24 of those on a touchdown run in the fourth period.

P.J. Moyer had 56 yards on 14 carries for Roanoke Catholic, which finished at 4-6 overall and 1-4 in the VIC. \

Northside 48

Christiansburg 26

Junior Karim Thompson carried 15 times for 216 yards and five touchdowns to lead a Vikings attack that churned out 428 rushing yards.

Thompson had four touchdowns by halftime as Northside (5-4) took a 27-14 lead over the Blue Demons (3-6). The Vikings benefited from end-zone interceptions by Donnie Leininger and John Doss.

Christiansburg was led by Andra Beasley, who had touchdown runs of 11, 25 and 4 yards. Thompson's touchdowns runs measured 1, 52, 2, 39 and 36 yards; he needs 80 yards in the final game to go over 1,000 for the season. \

Glenvar 7

Shawsville 6

The Highlanders stuffed the visiting Shawnees in the second half, holding them to 1 yard, as they won a non-district squeaker.

Glenvar (4-5) took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter off Mike Stanley's 1-yard run and conversion kick, but Shawsville (2-7) came back in the second when Darrell Bibb scored from the same distance.

The extra-point attempt was wide left.

Eric East paced Glenvar with 80 yards rushing on 17 carries.

Bibb led the Shawnees with 63 yards rushing on 10 carries. \

Auburn 19

Craig County 13

NEW CASTLE - Bobby Bonds ran for two touchdowns to spark the Eagles (4-5) to the non-district victory over the Rockets (0-9).

Quarterback Danny Dickerson rushed for 93 yards and Bonds 64 to lead the Auburn offense.

Craig County got two touchdowns from Johnny Crawford, including an 83-yard kickoff return on the final play of the third quarter.
