The Catamounts (6-3 overall, 5-1 Southern Conference) scored with 3:31 left in the first quarter when quarterback Lonnie Galloway rolled right on an option keeper and scored from 6 yards out.
Galloway completed 10 of 18 passes and was intercepted twice. His 193 yards against VMI brought his career total to 6,530 yards offense, moving him into sixth place on the Southern Conference list.
The Catamounts scored twice in the second quarter for a 17-0 halftime lead. Roberts had a 3-yard touchdown run and Rusty Russell kicked a 22-yard field goal.
"I didn't think we played well early on," Western Carolina coach Steve Hodgin said. "I was disappointed with the turnovers, and I thought we came out lethargic. We've got Appalachian [State] this week [Saturday]. I think that maybe our kids were looking ahead."
Thomas Haskins cut the Western Carolina lead to 17-7 in the second half with a 1-yard run at the start of the third quarter. It was the Keydets' first touchdown in 10 quarters.
"I felt offensively we did some things better," VMI coach Jim Shuck said. "But after a few first downs we bogged down some.
"That [Western Carolina] was the preseason No. 1 in the nation."
Two minutes after VMI scored, Roberts scored again, making the Catamounts' lead 24-7.
Harold Hines scored a touchdown for Western Carolina as time expired in the third quarter, and Herb Streater recovered punter Jeff Goff's fumble in the end zone for a touchdown with 5:31 to play.
VMI (1-9, 1-5) narrowed the gap to 31-14 with 13:35 to play when Haskins hit Marlon Anderson with a 49-yard touchdown pass.
Western Carolina had averaged 511.5 yards of total offense in its past six games, five of which they won.
"It was a really hard-fought game, and I thought our kids gave a great effort," Shuck said. "Western is a really good football team, and they made some big plays." \
