PANEL REJECTS PROPOSAL TO END OYSTER SEASON

The Potomac River Fisheries Commission has rejected the recommendation of its own staff to shut down Virginia's 3-week-old oyster season.

Scientists had warned that allowing oystering to continue on the Potomac could finish off the beleaguered shellfish for good. But watermen prevailed in their bid to continue what has been a meager harvest.

The oyster season normally runs until Dec. 31 and from Feb. 1 to March 31.

Commission members refused to take a vote on the matter Friday, so the season remains on schedule.
