2ND-HALF COMEBACK BY GUILFORD SINKS GENERALS 14-13

Jeff Hatch made second-half touchdown runs of 64 and 5 yards Saturday to lead Guilford to a 14-13 comeback victory over Washington and Lee in Old Dominion Athletic Conference football.

Guilford linebacker Max Appleby had eight tackles and assisted in 12 others as the Quakers (2-7 overall, 1-4 ODAC) held the Generals (1-7, 1-4) to 86 yards rushing.

Hatch accumulated 179 of Guilford's 187 yards rushing on 35 carries.

The Generals had two chances to regain the lead in the fourth quarter, but Drew Thomas missed a 31-yard field-goal attempt with 2:25 remaining and W&L did not capitalize after forcing a Guilford punt with 1:13 left.

W&L got 14 tackles from Robert Hull, including a sack and five tackles for loss. Hull also blocked a field-goal attempt.

BROOKLINE, Mass. - Quarterback Mike Cawley threw two touchdown passes in 81 seconds late in the first half as the Dukes rallied to rout the Huskies (1-8, 1-5) in a Yankee Conference game.

Cawley hit 14 of 30 passes for 225 yards for James Madison (5-4, 3-2). Cawley also scored a touchdown on a 6-yard run.

Northeastern, which has lost eight straight, took a 7-3 lead as freshman quarterback Jeff Pilarcek, making his first appearance, flipped a 2-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Laing.

With 2:13 to play in the second period, Cawley passed 33 yards to David McLeod for the go-ahead touchdown, then connected with Ed Perry 81 seconds later from 15 yards out and a 17-7 halftime lead.

James Madison drove 60 yards to start the third period, scoring on a 1-yard run by Steve Agee, then boosted its lead to 31-7 on a fumble recovery runback by Dion Foxx.

Cawley's touchdown made it 38-7 before Pilarcek sandwiched touchdown passes of 12 yards to Desmond Bellot and 46 yards to Tom Monios around a 1-yard touchdown run by the Dukes' Akarda Byrd. The Dukes got a final touchdown on Gary Lyons' 34-yard pass to Mike Woolder.

ORONO, Maine - Shawn Knight threw for 322 yards and a school-record six touchdowns to lead the Tribe (7-2, 5-1) to a Yankee Conference victory over the Black Bears.

Maine (3-6, 2-5) went 67 yards in 11 plays on its first possession to set up a 27-yard field goal by Tom Dadmun.

William and Mary struck back quickly, scoring on its first play from scrimmage when Knight hit Michael Tomlin for 85 yards and a touchdown.

A 4-yard touchdown reception by the Black Bears' Steve Knight in the fourth quarter cut the lead to 40-23, but Maine got no closer.

ORLANDO, Fla. - Darin Hinshaw threw six touchdown passes and David Rhodes caught a school record-tying four touchdown passes as the Knights doused the Flames.

Hinshaw completed 21 of 29 passes for 350 yards. Rhodes caught 11 passes for 150 yards.

Hinshaw and Rhodes connected on touchdown passes of 8 and 3 yards on Central Florida's first two possessions to give the Knights (7-2) a 14-0 lead.

Liberty (3-5) came right back with two touchdowns. Quarterback Antwan Chiles bootlegged in from 1 yard out for the first, and, after a Knights fumble, Scott Thomas burst up the middle and raced 29 yards untouched to the end zone.

Hinshaw responded with his third touchdown pass of the half, covering 24 yards to freshman Rufus Hall. Charlie Pierce kicked field goals of 38 and 39 yards, then backup quarterback Michael Jordan hit Rhodes for an 18-yard touchdown play.

The second half was all Central Florida with Hinshaw hitting three touchdown passes to three receivers.

AMHERST, Mass. - The Minutemen outrushed the Spiders 248-164 and Eric Oke kicked field goals of 29, 21 and 37 yards in a victory over Richmond.

Although the teams are members of the Yankee Conference, this was a designated non-league game. It was the sixth straight win for UMass (7-2).

Ahead 23-17 in the fourth quarter, UMass secured the victory with 4:41 to play when freshman quarterback Vito Campanile hit split end Eric Thimas with a 53-yard touchdown pass. Thimas had five receptions for 140 yards.

Richmond (5-4) made it close when quarterback Jason Gabrels tossed his third touchdown pass, a 9-yarder to split end Rod Boothes with 3:15 to play. Gabrels also had connected for touchdowns of 15 and 8 yards to flanker Jason Rydalch.

BRIDGEWATER - Andy Bush threw for four touchdowns and Dexter Hurt ran for three to lead the Yellow Jackets (6-2-1, 4-0) over the Eagles (2-7, 1-4) in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

David Hughes and Garry Carter caught two touchdown passes apiece for Randolph-Macon. Carter had seven receptions for 144 yards.

Hurt carried 15 times for 133 yards and scored on runs of 11, 2 and 3 yards.

Bush completed nine of 14 passes for 226 yards and was intercepted once.

\ Hampden-Sydney 35, Methodist 7: At Hampden-Sydney, Cetric Gayles gained 217 total yards and scored three touchdowns as the Tigers (6-3) defeated the Monarchs (4-5). Quarterback Brian Crist completed 11 of 15 passes for 182 yards and scored on a 1-yard run for Hampden-Sydney. The Tigers gained 486 total yards while holding Methodist to 159.

\ Hampton U. 41, Chowan 0: At Hampton, Anthony Smith gained 148 yards on 30 carries and scored two touchdowns as the Pirates shut out Chowan. Hampton (10-0) accumulated 390 total yards while holding Chowan (1-8) to 136 yards. Quarterback Eric Montgomery completed 13 of 22 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns.

\ Johnson C. Smith 20, Norfolk St. 13: At Norfolk, Wesley Tate threw two touchdown passes to Carl Lyles as Johnson C. Smith came from behind to defeat the Spartans in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association game. Norfolk State (3-6-1, 2-5-1) led 13-0 in the first quarter but was shut out the rest of the way.

\ Newport News 21, Charleston Southern 0: At Newport News, Jermaine Bellamy ran for 76 yards and one touchdown as the Builders blanked Charleston Southern. Newport News (6-2-1) finished its season with a six-game winning streak.

\ Virginia State 48, Lane 12: At Ettrick, Virginia State's Gregory Clark passed for 303 yards, four touchdowns and two two-point conversions to lead the Trojans to a non-conference victory over Lane College. Lane (1-7) gained 10 yards to 324 for Virginia State (9-1).

\ Winston-Salem St. 35, Virginia Union 27: At Richmond, Jamie Edmonds ran for two touchdowns as the Rams defeated the Panthers in the CIAA. Winston-Salem State (6-3-1) netted 340 yards rushing to 19 for Virginia Union (2-7-1). Richard Huntley had 141 yards rushing for the Rams, including a 59-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

\ Bethany, W.Va. 13, Clinch Valley 7: At Bethany, W.Va., Dan Takah ran 3 yards for a touchdown and Tom Smith kicked two field goals as the Bison shut down Clinch Valley's offense. Clinch Valley (5-4) drove 70 yards on its opening possession to lead 7-0 after Greg Thomas' 4-yard run. But the Bison (4-4-1) held Clinch Valley to just 95 yards the rest of the game.
