PARTRIDGE ON TOP IN GOLF TOURNAMENT

In Manassas, reigning state amateur champion David Partridge of Richmond fired a second consecutive par-72 under cold and blustery conditions to take a two-shot lead after 36 holes in the 14th VSGA Mid-Amateur golf championships at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club.

First-round leader Allen Barber of Newport News lost his ball on the opening tee shot and fell to ninth place with an 81. Roanoke's Mike Smith is in fourth after two rounds with a 149.

The 54-hole event concludes today.

In Bridgewater, Washington and Lee's Josephine Schaeffer won the women's individual title, and led the Generals to the team championship in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference cross country championships.

Schaeffer blew away the rest of the field, turning in a time of 17 minutes and 36 seconds, almost 90 seconds better than second-place finisher Cathy Showalter of Roanoke College. Amy Mears finished third and Kim Herring fourth for Washington and Lee, which beat second-place Roanoke 27-50.
