OBIT KARNES, HAZEL GRAY
KARNES, Hazel Gray, of Melrose Towers in Roanoke, Va., died Friday,
November 5, 1993, at her home. Born in Pembroke, Va., she was a daughter of
the late Joseph Sheridan and Lillian Meredith Cumbee. Mrs. Karnes was a
graduate of the Lewis-Gale School of Nursing and served her profession and
community in area hospitals and with the American Red Cross. She also served
with the U. S. Army in WWII, earning five Battle Stars, the Bronze Star and
European Theatre ribbon. She was a member of the American Legion Post in
Roanoke. She grew up attending the Pembroke United Methodist Church and had
attended the Woodlawn United Methodist Church in Roanoke and Forest Park
Baptist Church, also in Roanoke. She is survived by two sons and
daughters-in-law Raymond Earl Karnes Jr. and Mary Karnes of Chapel Hill, N.C.,
and Gary Lynn Karnes and Wenoah Karnes of Blue Ridge, Va.; one brother, Bill
Cumbee of Pembroke; three sisters, Nola Britts and Christine Collins, both of
Pembroke and Maxine Francis and brother-in-law, David Francis of Pearisburg.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, November 8, 1993,
at Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family requests that in lieu of
flowers, memorial contributions be made to Forest Park Baptist Church, 812
29th Street, N.W., Roanoke, Va. 24017. Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke, Va.
is in charge of arrangements.
