"I kept saying, `Yes. Yes. Yes,' " said the 5-foot-7 senior forward, who scored 11 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter. "All I kept thinking was that we had to win the game."
Tricia Rice made sure the Mountaineers did just that. The senior guard was fouled by Salem's Shellie Johnson with 12 seconds left and made the second of two free throws to give Alleghany a 53-52 advantage.
The Spartans then threw away an inbounds pass on their next possession, and the Mountaineers held on to advance to the semifinal round of the tournament.
Fourth-seeded Alleghany (13-8) faces top-seeded Lord Botetourt (20-1) at 6 p.m. Thursday at William Byrd High School. The Cavaliers won the teams' two regular-season meetings by an average of 18 points.
Moore, who also had 12 rebounds, scored three consecutive baskets in a span of 90 seconds to give Alleghany a 52-47 lead with 1 minute, 15 seconds remaining.
But the Spartans, who won the district's regular-season and tournament titles last year, fought back. Two Mountaineers fouls led to three points off Salem free throws, and Johnson hit a driving layup with 25 seconds left to tie the score.
Then came Rice's free throw, which ended Salem's season. The Spartans, seeded fifth, finished the year with a 10-11 record.
"This is the way it's been all year for us - up and down," said Dee Wright, Salem's coach.
The Mountaineers hit only eight of 21 foul shots, but they outrebounded the Spartans 30-21 - 14-4 in the second quarter.
Alleghany lost its advantage on the boards in the second half as the Mountaineers switched their defense to a box-and-one to stop Salem guard Stacie White, who nailed five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points.
"We pulled some people out to try and stop her," said Danny Keene, Alleghany's coach. "This isn't a rebounding team, but we did a fair job."
Now the Mountaineers face Lord Botetourt, Timesland's second-ranked team.
"They have loads of talent," Keene said of the Cavaliers, "but their hearts aren't any bigger than ours."
