NORTHSIDE ADVANCES WITH EASY VICTORY

Northside got points from 12 players to overpower Rockbridge County 50-23 in a first-round Blue Ridge District girls' basketball tournament game Tuesday night on the Vikings' court.

Shannon Yopp was the only double-figure scorer for Northside (10-11). She also helped the Vikings dominate the backboards.

Rockbridge County (5-17) did not have a player with more than five points.

Northside next faces a semifinal matchup with William Byrd in the second game of a Thursday doubleheader on the Terriers' floor.

Pioneer District

Parry McCluer 50, Craig County 41: In Buena Vista, Stephanie Rhodes scored 23 points, including the 1,000th of her career, as the Fighting Blues defeated the Rockets in the first round.

Parry McCluer (7-6) outscored Craig County 11-4 in the third quarter and held on for the victory.

Chrissy Robertson scored 20 points for the Rockets (5-8) and Rebekah Pierce added 12.

The Fighting Blues will play top-seeded Glenvar at 7 p.m. Thursday at James River.

James River 52, Bath County 21: In Buchanan, intense Knights pressure produced 28 steals and James River routed the Chargers in an opening-round game.

Kara Mundy had seven of the steals, many of which led to easy baskets, and also scored 18 points to go with five assists for James River (13-8). Angie Johnson added 13 points for the Knights.

James River, seeded second, will play the winner of the matchup between No. 3 Covington and No. 6 Highland in the second game of a semifinal doubleheader at James River.

Ricketta Ricketts led seventh-seeded Bath County (1-20) with six points.
