CRESTAR BANK TO PURCHASE N. VA. THRIFT

Crestar Financial Corp. has signed an agreement to acquire NVR Federal Savings Bank, a McLean-based thrift reporting $528 million in assets.

The acquisition, which is expected to be completed early next year, will bring Crestar about 36,000 customer accounts, deposits of $352 million and loans of $256 million.

Crestar will pay a premium of $6.8 million over the closing book value of the thrift.

The closing is subject to regulatory approvals.

Crestar will assume NVR's 111 employees and its four branches in Northern Virginia: two in McLean and one each in Reston and Tysons Corner.

With assets of $13 billion, Crestar has 302 offices, including 119 in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. - Staff report
